While I was performing my nest changes I found this nest to be particularly interesting. This little guy was obviously hatched a week or so after the other three. He/she appears healthy and with good parental care, should fledge with the others. This is just one of the many reasons while nest checks are so important. This is also evidence that you should not discard your eggs if they don't hatch right away. Usually, if they do not hatch within 2 weeks then it is safe to assume they will not hatch. Also, removing the bad eggs helps insure the babies to not accidentally smash them and potentially spread salmonella from the rotten eggs.
